Chapter 05 / Bench 12

A drawing that floats

The best part of a plan is the space where an experiment can begin.

The story

The sketch started as a boat and became a collection of corrections. I had drawn the bow too sharply, the seat too low and the fishing rod at an angle that would have annoyed everyone aboard. There was only one person aboard, but his opinion still mattered.

Beside the drawing lay a copper spoon and a pair of calipers. I moved them around until the bench looked less like a repair job and more like a story waiting for its setting. The new idea was small: change the balance, leave the scratches.

The evening test was inconclusive. The spoon wandered, the fish watched and the notebook acquired another arrow. I returned the sketch to the bench without calling it finished. Some plans work better when they remain willing to change.

This fictional workshop offers a story about making, not technical repair instructions.
